In practical terms: you take a big breath into your belly, push out against the belt, and this creates a rigid trunk that transmits force more efficiently between your legs and the bar. Common Beginner Belt Mistakes

Using a belt as a substitute for core strength — The belt amplifies your bracing capacity; it doesn't replace it. If you can't brace hard without a belt, you won't brace effectively with one.

Buying a cheap belt — A cheap belt is one of the worst false economies in strength training. Poor materials compress or fail, cheap buckles slip or break, and the belt teaches you nothing about proper bracing.

Wearing the belt too tight — A belt should be tight enough that you can push against it, not so tight that you can't breathe into it. If you can't get a full belly breath, it's too tight.
