High Bar and Low Bar are both back squats, yet the different bar positions affect torso angle, knee travel, hip movement and the way the lifter balances the load.

Training goal, body proportions, mobility and sporting context all influence which position makes sense. Weightlifters often favour High Bar because it supports deep, upright squat strength. High Bar also has a clear role in general strength training. It provides a straightforward way to train the squat through a large range of motion with substantial involvement from the quadriceps.

Does High Bar require a narrow stance?

Some lifters reach depth comfortably with a relatively narrow stance. Others need more space between the feet to allow the hips and knees to move freely.

Foot angle varies for the same reason. A slight toe-out position often gives the knees room to track in the same general direction as the feet. Hip structure, limb proportions and mobility influence the exact angle.

A useful stance allows the whole foot to stay loaded, gives the knees a consistent path and lets the lifter reach the intended depth without losing balance.

Low Bar Squat: finding a secure bar position

Finding that shelf matters. Placing the bar lower without creating a secure contact point can leave it prone to slipping and place unnecessary demand on the hands and wrists.

Upper-back tension, shoulder position and grip width all help keep the barbell fixed against the back.

A narrower grip can increase upper-back tension, although it also requires more shoulder mobility. Some lifters are more comfortable slightly wider. The useful grip width is the one that secures the bar without making the shoulders or wrists the limiting factor.

The hands assist with keeping the bar in position. They should not have to support a meaningful share of its weight.

High Bar can also be valuable in a powerlifting programme. It changes the technical emphasis and can provide additional squat volume without simply repeating the competition movement.

Start with what you want to train and the goal the squat needs to support.
