Bumper plates are solid rubber discs with a steel insert, also available as a competition-style version. They all share the same diameter, bounce predictably and can be dropped from overhead, which makes them the standard for weightlifting and functional training. Cast iron plates are slimmer, so more weight fits on the sleeve, and they suit squats, presses and deadlifts that come back down under control. Calibrated steel plates take that idea further with tight weight tolerances for powerlifting and streetlifting. Their IPF certification makes them suitable both for training and for kitting out official competitions. Rubber coated plates wrap an iron core in rubber, which protects floors and equipment in busy gyms. Fractional plates cover the small steps in between, and our plate sets combine matched weights for a complete loadout.

Which weight plates suit your training

If the bar comes down fast, snatches, clean and jerks, high-rep barbell conditioning, choose bumpers. If you train the big three and lower every rep, classic strength training in other words, iron or steel gives you more plates per sleeve and a firmer feel at heavy loads. A home gym usually does well with one pair of 20kg weight plates or 25kg weight plates as a base, plus smaller plates to build working weights. Commercial facilities tend to mix: bumpers on the platforms, rubber coated gym plates on the racks, fractional plates by the bench for pressing progress.

Two habits matter more than any product: unload the bar after training, because plates parked on a sleeve for weeks invite rust rings, and store plates upright on pegs rather than stacked flat on the floor, where the bottom disc carries the whole pile and moisture collects between plates.
