If you have spent any time researching barbells, you have noticed something: the spec sheets look almost identical. Both are 20kg. Both have 50mm sleeves. Both have 81cm grip markings. And yet a deadlift bar and a power bar behave so differently under load that experienced lifters treat them as completely separate pieces of equipment — not interchangeable variations of the same thing.

This guide explains exactly what separates them, which one belongs in your training, and when having both is the correct answer.

The core difference: shaft diameter and what it does

Every meaningful mechanical difference between a deadlift bar and a power bar flows from a single specification: shaft diameter.

The stiffness of a cylindrical shaft against bending — its resistance to flexing under load — does not scale linearly with diameter. It scales with the fourth power of the radius. This means that a shaft which is even slightly thinner is disproportionately more flexible under the same load. A 27mm shaft flexes significantly more than a 29mm shaft. This is the physics behind the concept of barbell whip, and it is the reason deadlift bars and power bars exist as separate categories rather than as one bar that does everything.

What barbell whip actually is — and why it matters for the deadlift

Whip is the elastic deformation of the bar shaft under load. When you set up for a deadlift, grip the bar, and begin applying tension before the plates leave the floor, a flexible shaft bends downward at the centre. This does two things that matter for the lift.

First, it allows you to pull slack before the full weight of the plates must move. On a stiff bar, the entire loaded weight must be overcome simultaneously — the moment the bar starts to move, everything moves. On a flexing bar, the shaft bends under your pull before the plates break the floor, which means you have already built tension and momentum before you are fighting the full weight. This is the mechanical advantage of a deadlift bar, and it is why world records in the deadlift are overwhelmingly pulled on 27mm bars rather than 29mm bars. And: your starting point is higher. 

Second, the bar stores elastic energy as it bends, and releases it as the shaft straightens back out during the ascent. This contributes to the speed of the pull through the sticking point.

For the squat and bench press, whip is the opposite of what you want. A flexing shaft under a heavy back squat is unpredictable and destabilising. A flexing shaft on a bench press moves the bar path. Both of these are problems. A 29mm power bar is stiffer by design precisely because stability and predictability matter more than elastic energy return in these lifts.

Knurling: why deadlift bars are more aggressive

The logic is direct. A deadlift is a pulling movement where the bar wants to roll out of your hands as it rises. Grip failure in a deadlift is extremely common at maximal loads, and the knurling is the primary tool for preventing it. More aggressive knurling — a deeper, sharper profile — bites into the palm and resists rolling more effectively.

The absence of a centre knurl on the deadlift bar is the other half of this story. A centre knurl on a deadlift bar would lacerate the shins on every pull from the floor. Deadlift bars do not have one. Power bars have a centre knurl specifically because it bites into the upper back on high-bar squats, stabilising the bar position across the traps. Length: why the deadlift bar is longer

Do you need both?

For most lifters: no, not immediately. A quality power bar handles the deadlift adequately, and the difference in pulling performance between a 27mm and a 29mm bar is more significant at elite loads than at intermediate training weights.

For competitive powerlifters in federations that permit deadlift bars: yes. Training on the same bar specification you will use in competition removes a variable from meet day. If your federation allows a deadlift bar, train on one.
